History and Heritage - Uxbridge Ontario

The York Durham Heritage Railway

Built in the late 1800's to transport grain and lumber it was known as the Toronto and Nippissing Railway (T&N). Once completed it ran from Toronto to Coboconk. The rail line went through many ownership changes over the years and eventually ended up as part of the Canadian National Railway system owned by the Government of Canada in 1920. All That remains of the line today is the section from Uxbridge to Toronto as over the years sections of the rail line were taken out of service.

Passenger service which began in 1871 is continued today by GO Transit with trains running from Stouffivle to Toronto. YDHR runs Tourist Trains on weekends during the summer and for special events year round from Uxbridge to Stouffville.

The Uxbridge Station, pictured here with some of the rolling stock, is one of the last 4 remaining T&N stations. The others are located in Unionville, Markham and Coboconk.

Kathy, It's very unique and I love the roof!  They actually preserved our old RR Station and I'm so glad.  One of the few remaining treasures we have.

Carole - sometimes we are in to big of a hurry to tear down the old and build something new. Each passing generation losses a little bit of our history and our heritage this way.

Kathy,

Another post to send to my Dad! I talked with him last night and unfortunately his computer went in to the shop on Friday for repairs so he can't read the blog of yours that I sent him....he gets it back Monday though and is looking forward to seeing the old station and reading the links.
